To help breathe new life into the aging Wet Zone Waterpark, the City of Rowlett partnered with Waterplay to design and deliver a brand-new splash pad within the facility. As a key revenue-generating destination for the city, Wet Zone already features a variety of aquatic attractions, including water slides, a lazy river, and a lap pool. The addition of a modern, thoughtfully designed splash pad offered an opportunity to enhance the guest experience while supporting long-term revenue growth through paid admission.

From early conversations through final installation, Waterplay worked closely with the city to ensure the new splash pad would complement the existing waterpark while introducing fresh energy, inclusive play, and visual impact.

The Challenge

The City of Rowlett wanted to create a splash pad that would be safe, inclusive, and engaging for users of all ages and abilities. While there were no requests for specific features, the city placed a strong emphasis on creating a cohesive aesthetic that aligned with their brand identity. This included incorporating the City of Rowlett logo into the design through custom graphics and creating a defined red, white, and blue colour palette that carried across the splash pad design.

The site itself introduced additional complexity to the project, as significant grading work was required to properly prepare the area for construction. This included soil relocation to accommodate the installation of features. A wrought-iron fence surrounding the site also needed to be removed to allow construction equipment access during the build.

The Solution

Waterplay’s experienced design teams approached the project with a focus on maximizing play value while delivering a cohesive, visually striking space. By carefully selecting a mix of dynamic and gentle splash pad features, the design balanced high-energy excitement with accessible, low-sensory play options.

Customizable features like the Mega Soakers and aO-Riginal incorporated into the Spiral Tunnel allowed the city’s logo to be seamlessly integrated into the design, reinforcing civic pride throughout the space. Towering at the centre of the splash pad, a bold Toro titan creates a striking focal point, delivering splash and spray action from every angle. Complementing the taller, high-impact features are calmer elements like a Waterfall 3Slosh 3Hula Hooper, and Aqua Juggle, offer younger Waterplayers and sensory-sensitive users a more relaxed play experience.

To bring the entire space together, Life Floor surfacing was incorporated, providing a cushioned, slip-resistant surface customized to match the city’s colour palette. The result is a unified play environment that is both visually engaging and safe for all users.

The Implementation

Once the design was finalized and features were ordered, attention shifted to site preparation and installation. As with every Waterplay project, collaboration and communication were essential. Waterplay’s project management team provided ongoing support throughout the installation process, both on-site and remotely, ensuring all technical and design requirements were met.

Axis Commercial Aquatics led the installation and worked closely with both the City of Rowlett and Waterplay teams. Their flexibility and problem-solving mindset proved especially valuable when a late-stage change order extended the project timeline. Through close coordination, all parties navigated the challenges and successfully brought the splash pad to completion.

Given the use of a recirculating water treatment system, precise installation of water lines was critical to ensure long-term performance and reliable feature operation once the splash pad opened to the public.

The Outcome

The completed splash pad at Wet Zone Rowlett delivers vibrant play, thoughtful design, and strong visual identity, making it a natural fit within this well-loved community destination. Packed with engaging features and anchored by custom City of Rowlett graphics, the space invites collaborative play while offering something for every age group.

Beyond enhancing the guest experience, the new splash pad supports the city’s goal of driving continued revenue back into community amenities. Officially opened in June 2025, the splash pad has quickly become a crowd favourite and a standout addition to Wet Zone Waterpark, reinforcing the value of expert-led design and collaborative partnerships in creating lasting aquatic play spaces.
