When the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre in Torquay, Queensland, Australia started to tackle renovations on their facility, Waterplay Australia was brought in to breathe new life into a well-loved community destination, proving that revitalization can deliver just as much excitement as a brand-new build. Waterplay has been part of the aquatic centre’s story for years, having originally supplied features within the existing facility that are now being thoughtfully refreshed as part of the upgrade.

By refreshing the zero-depth splash pad and adding a dynamic Activity Tower directly into the existing lagoon pool, Waterplay transformed familiar spaces into active and exciting play zones. With decades of aquatic expertise and a long-standing history at the site, Waterplay focused on elevating what already worked - creating experiences that families are excited to return to again and again.

The Challenge

Revitalizing an active aquatic centre presents a very different challenge than starting from scratch. Hervey Bay needed to welcome new generations of families while respecting the experiences of those who had grown up with the existing facility. The goal was to introduce modern, engaging aquatic play experiences without losing the character of a facility that the community already knew and loved.

New splash pad features had to integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure, enhance rather than dominate the lagoon, and create clear play zones without disrupting the overall flow of the space. This evolution needed to be delivered through a staged approach that respected public investment and long-term planning.

The Solution

Waterplay approached the project with a clear focus on evolution, not replacement. Working alongside project partners Urban Play and Liquid Blu, the team designed a revitalized aquatic play space that complemented the existing facility while delivering a noticeable lift in play value and visual impact.

zero-depth interactive splash pad introduced a dedicated space for younger users and families. Bright colours and an accessible layout brought fresh energy to the site while fitting naturally within the broader aquatic environment. Splashy features like the BlowfishCrabbie 1Snapper 2 and Octopus create fun, dynamic water effects that can be enjoyed by all ages.

The lagoon pool was reenergized with the addition of a custom Activity Tower, introducing vertical movement and dynamic play directly into the water. A Waterfall 2 was also added to the lagoon, creating discovery play opportunities for users of all ages. The existing Mega Soaker from Waterplay’s original installation was refurbished and repainted, extending its lifespan and preserving a familiar splash pad favourite. Life Floor surfacing provides a vibrant, cushy, and grip-resistant surface, while integrated shade structures complete the experience, providing relief from the hot sun to improve comfort and usability of the space.

The Implementation

Implementation at Hervey Bay was about working with the site, not around it. Supported by funding from the Queensland Government, the project required careful planning to integrate new aquatic features while respecting existing systems, infrastructure, and ongoing operations. Waterplay Australia partnered closely with the project team, drawing on years of experience in splash pad installations to get the job done.

Through technical coordination, product expertise, and collaborative delivery, Waterplay made sure that the features that were installed, both in the splash pad and the lagoon, supported the long-term evolution of the centre.

The Outcome

Stage 1B of the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre revitalization, which included the upgrades to the splash pad and lagoon pool, was completed in August 2025 and highlights how thoughtful investment can extend the lifespan and relevance of an existing facility. By building on what already worked, Waterplay delivered modern, engaging aquatic play experiences that cater to users of all ages and abilities, while setting the foundation for future stages of redevelopment across the rest of the aquatic centre.

New interactive elements bring colour, movement, and excitement to familiar settings, while refreshed features maintain a sense of continuity and nostalgia. Integrated shade and clear zoning encourage longer stays and greater comfort, ensuring the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre continues to evolve as a vibrant, well-used, and well-loved community destination for years to come.
