Sun, sand, and splash!
Newly opened along the sun-soaked beaches of the Samaná Peninsula, Donoma Las Terrenas Beach Resort & Spa offers a fresh take on relaxed, coastal luxury. Designed as a welcoming destination for travelers of all ages, the resort blends comfort, culture, and thoughtful amenities that enhance the overall guest experience.
Among those amenities is a custom-designed splash pad by Waterplay. Integrated seamlessly into the resort’s layout, the splash pad adds an extra layer of energy and play without overpowering the atmosphere. It gives families a place to cool off, connect, and enjoy active moments together, complementing poolside relaxation and beach days with a fun and dynamic play experience.
The Challenge
As a brand-new resort, Donoma Las Terrenas Beach Resort & Spa had the unique opportunity to design its amenities with intention from the ground up. The goal was to create a space that appealed to entire families, not as an add-on, but as a core part of the overall guest experience.
The resort wanted an aquatic play area that felt thoughtful and high quality, with safety and accessibility built in from the start. A dumping bucket was a must-have, along with interactive features that would keep kids engaged while allowing parents to relax nearby. The splash pad also needed to complement the resort’s overall aesthetic and perform reliably in a coastal environment.
To bring it all together, the resort partnered with Waterplay and ACL Project Management Corp., looking for a team that could deliver both creativity and confidence on an international stage.
The Solution
From the start, the design process was driven by collaboration and a clear understanding of how guests would move through and use the space. Through ongoing conversations with the client and ACL Project Management Corp., Waterplay helped create an aquatic play experience that balances energy, accessibility, and ease of use within the resort environment.
Positioned alongside a beach-entry swimming pool, the splash pad was designed to feel like a natural extension of the surrounding amenities. Its zero-depth layout supports inclusive play and effortless movement, making it easy for guests of all ages and abilities to join in on the fun, whether they are actively splashing or staying close to the action.
A Ladybug Soaker anchors the splash pad, delivering big, thrilling splashes that create excitement without overwhelming the setting. Interactive features like Splash Blasters, Froggie-O, and Aqua Arches add variety and encourage cooperative play, while a Spinny Squirt and Water-Leaf offer gentler water sprays and showers for younger Waterplayers or those looking for a softer play experience.
Finished in a bright, tropical colour palette, the splash pad reflects the character of the resort and its coastal surroundings. The result is an amenity that feels playful and intentional, enhancing the guest experience while fitting seamlessly into the overall resort design.
The Implementation
Launching a new resort comes with a lot of moving parts, and the splash pad was no exception. Waterplay worked closely with ACL Projects and the resort team to finalize the design, coordinate feature selections, and support the project through delivery and installation.
This build marked ACL Projects’ first installation in the Dominican Republic. With Waterplay’s technical guidance and the expertise of local construction partner Constructora Arpel, the installation process moved forward smoothly and efficiently. Clear communication and strong collaboration helped ensure the splash pad met performance, safety, and quality expectations right out of the gate.
The Outcome
Now open and already full of life, the splash pad has quickly become a highlight of the Donomas Las Terrenas Beach Resort & Spa experience. Kids run, splash, and laugh their way through the space, while parents relax by the pool, knowing the area is safe, accessible, and designed with care.
The Ladybug Soaker has emerged as an early crowd favourite, delivering big splashes that turn first impressions into lasting memories. As guests discover the resort for the first time, the splash pad is helping define its identity as a truly family-friendly destination.
For Waterplay, this project showcases what is possible when play is built in from day one. It stands as a strong reference for new resorts and hospitality destinations across the Caribbean and beyond, proving that thoughtful aquatic play spaces can help set the tone, draw families in, and keep them coming back.
